Since January 2025 I decided to leave X and join Bluesky, due to a Nazi salute performed by someone very close to the former social network. They look pretty much the same from an aesthetic point of view, but at the core they are the opposite: Bluesky is based on the AT Protocol that allows users to have complete control over their own data. In simple terms, data are stored on a server called a Personal Data Server (PDS), and users can decide to transfer them from one provider to another or even self-host them, in order to get full control over them. I am now thinking about also moving my GitHub account to tangled.org, also based on the AT Protocol, and I am wondering whether to transfer my PDS from Bluesky to Tangled, or even self-host it. I feel like my journey toward full control is just at the beginning and may continue with all those services that are making the presence of ads more and more intrusive: music is the next one.
